Start with your own clean towel
Check whether your venue supplies towels or expects you to bring one. If you bring your own, choose a clean towel ready for that visit. CDC athlete guidance advises against sharing towels and recommends washing them after each use. This is care for the towel you already use, not a reason to buy special equipment.
Empty the bag when you get home
When you pack a gym bag, leave room to keep used items apart from clean clothes during the journey. Unpack the used towel at home rather than returning the whole bag to its usual spot. Cleveland Clinic specifically discusses shower towels left damp in gym bags for hours. Airing a used towel is not washing it.
Read the care label first
Check the towel label before choosing washing and drying settings. CDC recommends following those instructions and completely drying athletic towels in a dryer. Do not invent a temperature or add bleach simply because a towel was used at the gym. If the label prevents the recommended drying method, seek suitable care advice rather than ignoring it.
Finish washing and drying before reuse
Wash the used towel according to its care instructions, then let the permitted drying cycle finish completely. Avoid treating a quick rinse, a pleasant smell or a dry surface as proof of cleanliness. This routine does not promise sterilization or prevention of every infection. Keep the clean, dry towel apart from items awaiting laundry.
Add laundry to visit preparation
Pair unpacking with another familiar arrival task so the towel does not stay forgotten in the bag. Before the next visit, check towel readiness when you prepare exercise clothes. Plan your session with Fitonomy if useful. A towel still awaiting washing belongs in the laundry routine, not automatically back in the bag.
