Read the temperature, not just the dial
A numbered dial is a setting, not necessarily a temperature reading. Before preparing food for later, check the refrigerator itself. The FDA storage guide recommends at or below 4 degrees Celsius, also stated as 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Follow local food safety advice and package instructions too. A cold reading today cannot confirm earlier food handling.
Use an appliance thermometer
Choose a thermometer intended for a refrigerator and follow its placement and reading instructions. Allow the device to settle as directed, with the door closed, then read it. The FDA thermometer guide explains why a separate thermometer can help when controls do not show actual temperature. Record the reading and date; do not guess from how cold a container feels.
Leave space for cold air
Keep food in covered containers and leave gaps around them rather than filling every shelf tightly. Cold air needs to circulate. Wipe spills promptly and keep raw food drips away from prepared food. Our produce washing guide covers preparation before storage. Clean containers and cold air do not replace safe handling.
Respond to a warm reading
If the reading is above the recommended target, check the appliance instructions, adjust the setting if appropriate and recheck after the stated settling time. Do not keep adding perishable food to an unreliable fridge. Use another suitable cold storage option and seek appliance help if needed. Follow local advice for food exposed to unsuitable temperatures; recooling or a normal smell does not prove it safe.
Connect the check with your meal
Plan one chilled component only when storage is workable. Follow thawing instructions for frozen ingredients and the cold lunch guide for transport. Return to balanced meal building for composition and use Fitonomy for fitness planning. The app does not measure fridge temperature or verify food safety.
A refrigerator reading describes storage, not the inside of a cooked meal. Use the food probe checklist for that separate measurement.
After checking storage temperature, check what the food date means before using a package for a later meal.
A cold reading does not clean a shelf. Before removing parts, plan permitted washing and cold storage without assuming another model's instructions apply.
