Begin with your personal instructions

This guide is for an exercise your physiotherapist has already taught you as appropriate. The CHFT programme explicitly limits practice to taught exercises. Follow your own support and repetition instructions. If this task is unfamiliar or your movement restrictions have changed, ask for guidance before trying it. This is not a balance test or a rehabilitation prescription.

Check the whole route

Use a level, well lit area with enough room for both curves. Remove loose rugs, cables and objects from the route and wear secure supportive footwear. Trace the path with your eyes before moving. Do not make a tight turn merely to fit a crowded space. If the area or your required support is unsuitable, skip the attempt.

Understand the two loops

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital guide describes a clockwise turn followed by an anticlockwise turn, forming a figure eight. Walk forward around one loop, pass through the middle, then follow the opposite curve. Use the regular pace you were taught, an upright comfortable posture and steps that turn your whole body. Do not twist on a planted foot or add speed, backward steps or a second task.

Preserve the support you need

The same hospital guide warns against relying on an object that can move. Two route landmarks are not automatically safe hand supports. If you need continuous support and cannot arrange it for the whole route, do not release it to complete the shape. Ask your physiotherapist for a suitable setup. Our backward steps, tandem walking and side steps describe different tasks, not automatic substitutes.

Record the setup and respect symptoms

Note the route, support and whether both directions felt manageable. Do not interpret a difference as a diagnosis or proof of progress. The beginner mobility guide helps organize reading. Stop for pain, dizziness or instability; chest pain or severe breathlessness needs urgent medical help. Fitonomy Mobility is a separate movement app; these translations do not imply every interface language. No fall prevention or other result is promised.
