Clear the entire path

Choose a level floor beside an immovable counter long enough for only a few steps. Check the space behind you from start to finish and remove loose objects. Wear secure footwear and keep a hand on the support or close enough to use it immediately. This is an optional movement practice, not a balance test or a fall prevention promise. If the route is not clear, choose another movement.

Stand beside support

Stand sideways to the counter with feet comfortably apart. Hold it with the nearer hand and look ahead. The South Tees NHS guidance describes backward walking beside support and turning inward toward it at the end. Its prescribed programme distance does not apply to everyone. Start with a smaller path that you can control.

Step backward slowly

Move one foot back a short distance, place it fully on the floor, then bring the other foot back without narrowing into a tight line. Keep the hand contact you need, a tall comfortable posture and a steady pace. The Worcestershire NHS programme also shows backward walking beside a solid surface. You need not match its step count. Stop before reaching the end of the clear support.

Finish facing the counter

Bring both feet to a comfortable width and pause. Turn toward the counter in small steps while maintaining support, rather than twisting or walking backward beyond it. If you feel unsteady, dizzy or in pain, stop the attempt. A fall history, recent injury, surgery or personal movement restriction warrants individual advice before using a general guide.

Our tandem walking guide travels forward with one foot close ahead of the other, while the supported side step travels sideways. This task travels backward with ordinary foot spacing. Record only whether the route and support felt manageable, not a promised improvement. The beginner mobility guide helps choose a different task.
