Check personal suitability first
This is a movement explanation, not a balance assessment or treatment plan. For balance difficulties, falls, injury, surgery or movement restrictions, ask your clinician whether this task suits you. The Mersey Care NHS programme describes the forward and backward parts separately for beginners. This guide explains only the supported forward part.
Prepare stable support
Use an immovable counter beside a clear, level floor and secure footwear. Keep your eyes open and a hand on support. Start with feet together only if that stance is suitable and steady for you. If you cannot settle there with support, do not continue; choose a suitable alternative from the beginner mobility guide.
Place one foot forward
Keeping support, move one foot a small distance forward and place the whole foot on the floor. Pause before transferring weight. Choose a distance you can control without reaching or pulling on the counter. This is not a deep lunge, a narrow line walk or a step onto raised equipment.
Transfer weight and reset
Gradually let weight move onto the forward foot while keeping the other foot grounded and your hand supported. Do not force a large lean. Ease back to a settled stance before bringing the foot back, and pause before changing sides. Stop for pain, dizziness or unsteadiness. There is no universal repetition count or unsupported progression here.
Distinguish the task and record context
In toe taps, the free foot touches lightly; here the forward foot receives weight. The sideways shift keeps both feet planted, while backward stepping travels. Note support and return control without scoring yourself or promising improvement. Fitonomy Mobility is for movement practice; translated articles do not establish app interface languages.
