Settle the supported foot

Sit on a stable chair with both feet resting on the floor. Move one foot where you can see it. Use bare feet or a sock that does not squeeze the toes. Let the heel and ball of the foot settle without pressing hard. This is an unloaded movement task, not a standing balance test.

Lift only the big toe

Try lifting the big toe a small amount while the other four toes remain relaxed on the floor. Lower it slowly and release the effort. The NHS Toe Yoga instructions describe this direction on a clinical bunion page. We use the movement description, not its treatment claims or exercise schedule. Do not lift the toe with your hands or pull it upward.

Keep the ankle quiet

Watch whether the whole forefoot lifts, the heel rolls or the knee shifts. Settle those parts and use less effort. Keep the smaller toes long rather than gripping the floor. If you cannot separate the movement comfortably, stop the attempt. That observation does not diagnose a foot problem or require a bigger range.

Separate neighboring movements

The toe spreading guide widens the toes; the toe curl guide bends them downward. Here the big toe lifts and returns while the other toes rest. Choose one task through the beginner mobility guide instead of treating every foot drill as a required routine.

Respect limits and record control

Stop for pain, numbness, cramping, swelling or unusual colour change. A recent injury, operation, movement restriction, diabetes or reduced sensation needs individual advice. The NHS toe symptoms guide explains when to seek help; new loss of sensation or a serious injury warrants prompt advice. Record the side, support and one control observation, without a required count or promised walking benefit. Explore Fitonomy Mobility separately; article languages do not imply app language availability.

To explore the opposite contact pattern, lift the four smaller toes with the big toe resting without raising the whole forefoot.

A hand assisted stretch is a different task from lifting the big toe yourself. If a clinician has taught that task, review the supported toe stretch without adding pressure to this active lift.
