Fit the station before pulling
Sit with your feet on the floor and adjust the thigh pad until it rests firmly on your upper thighs without pinching. Choose a seat position that lets the bar travel in front of you. The ACE exercise guide starts with this stable setup. If the station differs, follow its instructions or ask a qualified gym professional.
Start light and reach evenly
Select a load you can move without swinging. Take a comfortable, even overhand grip around shoulder width and settle under the pad with your arms extended. The NASM technique guide describes this as a useful general starting grip, not a rule for every shoulder. If reaching the bar makes you twist or stand on the seat, get help with the setup.
Pull in front of the body
Keep your head aligned and your torso mostly still with only a slight lean. Lead your elbows down toward your sides while the bar approaches the upper chest in front of your face. Avoid jerking backward or pulling behind the neck. This vertical cable pull differs from the supported horizontal path in our beginner dumbbell row.
Let the bar rise with control
Pause briefly when the elbows stop moving comfortably downward, then let the bar rise as the arms lengthen. Keep hold of it rather than letting the weight stack crash. Breathe naturally and use a smaller comfortable range if your shoulder position changes. A few careful practice repetitions tell you more than a heavy first set.
Decide what comes next
Stop if the movement causes pain, dizziness, or unusual symptoms. Reduce the load or ask for individual advice if you cannot keep the torso steady. Compare machine choices in machines and free weights for beginners, then place this pull beside other movements in your first gym workout guide. Fitonomy gym workouts can help you place this exercise within a wider training plan. Machines differ, so follow your station instructions.
A high cable can also be used for a triceps pressdown, where the elbows extend while the upper arms stay beside the trunk. Do not copy the moving upper arm path of this pulldown.
